Rototom Sunsplash 2015
The blend of rhythms of Matisyahu, the commitment and power of the Sierra Leone’s Refugees All Stars and the powerful voice of Shuga complete the new group of confirmations for this August.
Artists including Mala Rodríguez, Amparo Sánchez, Sr. Wilson, Roberto Sánchez, El Payoh Soulrebel & The Blackstarliners will participate in a special tribute commemorating the 70th anniversary of the birth of Bob Marley.
Major Lazer, the musical project founded in 2008 by the DJs and producers Diplo (Thomas Wesley Pentz) and Switch (Dave Taylor) and which has become one of the most eclectic, prolific and versatile of the planet, will stop off this year at Rototom Sunsplash, to be held from the 15th to the 22nd of August in Benicàssim (Spain). The group, currently with Diplo, Jillionaire and the Jamaican Walshy Fire at the helm, has collaborated with renowned international artists like Snoop Dog, Konshens, Busy Signal, Sean Paul, Shaggy, Wyclef Jean, The Prodigy and No Doubt. Their successful career, took off internationally with their first album “Guns don’t kill people… Lazers do” (2009), recorded in the Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica, influenced by the purest reggae and dancehall rhythms. After releasing the EP “Apocalypse Soon” in February 2014, the group released details about their upcoming album, “Peace is the Mission”, which is set to be released in June. Fitting, as peace will be the official theme of the festival.
The spirit and legacy of Bob Marley, the artist who has contributed most to the popularisation of the reggae music around the world, will be present at Rototom Sunsplash. As a special tribute on the 70th anniversary of his birth, the festival has scheduled a tribute to Marley bringing together, in an original project from Middleground, some of the most prominent figures of reggae, hip hop and fusión nationally. La Mala Rodríguez, Amparo Sánchez, Sr. Wilson, Roberto Sánchez, El Payoh Soulrebel, Sama Dago & The Blackstarliners will reinterpret some of Bob Marley’s classics on the Main Stage of the festival in an unique spectacle: the ‘MARLEY 70 Spanish Tribute’.
Regarding the individual artists added to the line-up of the Main Stage, we will have the presence of the american singer Matisyahu, who became known originally for his peculiar style that fused rock and hip hop with reggae rhythms to convey lyrics inspired by both the everyday and Hebrew culture. The artist, whose real name is Matthew Paul Miller, has a solid recording career behind him comprised of 12 works. In 2007 his album ‘Youth’ was nominated for best reggae album at the Grammys.
The social commitment of Rototom Sunsplash, which this year will specially address peace and the problem of pain caused by armed conflicts that continue to bleed our planet, will also have its musical counterpart at the hand of Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. The musicians, who were forced to flee to a refugee camp in Guinea when war ravaged their country, have moved the world with their as much as through their music. In fact, the tragedy experienced by the group, inspired a documentary recorded in 2005.
Attendees of Rototom Sunsplash will also have the opportunity to once again enjoy the powerful voice, natural talent and the electric stage presence of Mitzie ‘Shuga’ Campbell, aka Brown Sugar, who was spectacular at the Showcase Club last year. The young Jamaican singer, who started very young in the world of music through concerts and talent competitions in Montego Bay, which laid the foundations for a bright and promising career that has, to date, included singles like “Bedroom Punisher”, “Tell me a lie” and “In death”, real treasures.
