Lioness on the Rise
Maliika Walker-Island Stage
Lioness. When I see or hear this word I think of all the strong, confident, intelligent women that have come before me. I picture a woman who will do whatever is necessary to fight for her loved ones and herself. A woman that stands tall when circumstances requires her to do so.
My thoughts often wander to the women who survived atrocities in the past and present. The women who are raising their children the best way they know how despite living in conditions we could not even imagine. People worldwide are alive because of the sacrifices of these women. We are all descendants of Lionesses, no matter our nationality.
The song by Queen Ifrica entitled, ‘Lioness on the Rise’, conjures up thoughts of such women.
This weekend while running my errands I sat behind a woman and her children. I could not help but overhear the woman explain to her daughter why they finally had to leave the child’s father and start over. She said to her child, “Abusing me is one thing but even attempting to touch you is not an option. We will survive and be fine without him. The Lord will find a way. You are my child, my responsibility and I will make sure we will be just fine.” She is a Lioness. A woman who was forced to do whatever it was necessary to protect her family.
Look at your history. Somewhere in your past is an example of a lioness. My mother was a lioness, a woman who despite trials and tribulations kept my brother and I clothed, fed, and warm. It didn’t matter how bleak things became we knew we were going to be ok because our mother, our lioness was going to ensure we were. There is something sacred about the bond between a woman and her child. The bond that is an unbreakable trust that causes a child to believe in their mother despite the bleak reality that somehow stood before them. My mothers lioness spirit is the key reason why my brother and I trusted in her completely.
I have no doubt that I will achieve any goal I set for myself. I know that once I declare the goal I will achieve it. Obstacles may surely come our way to test our will and our strength. We are all possessed with the strength of our ancestors. All women are lionesses even when we do not realize it. A time is going to come when the lioness inside of you will appear and you will be stronger than you thought was ever possible. You just have to live and that lioness strength will shine through you.
