1492
The island was discovered by Europeans when Christopher Columbus landed in the New World.

1509
The Spanish claim the Island. Many of the indigenous Arawak community dies off from exposure to European diseases.

1655
Jamaica is seized by the British.

1670
Treaty of Madrid: Jamaica formally handed over to the British by the Spanish.

1692
The Jamaican capital Port Royal is destroyed by an earthquake, Spanish Town becomes the new capital and Kingston is founded.

1731
The first Maroon war between the British and the Maroons.

In 1739-40
The British signed a treaty which gave the Maroons their five main towns (Accompong, Trelawny Town, Moore Town, Scots Hall, Nanny Town), living under their own rulers.

1795-96
The Second Maroon War of between the Maroons of Trelawny Parish, Jamaica and the British.

1838
Slavery abolished

1865
The Morant Bay rebellion. Freed slaves are quelled in their rebellion against the British and Jamaica becomes a crown colony.

1914
The Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) is Founded by Marcus Garvey

1938
Riots and the People’s National Party (PNP) is founded by Norman Manley.

1943
The Jamaica Labour Party was founded by Alexander Bustamante as the political wing of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union.

1958
Jamaica becomes a member of the Federation of the West Indies.

1961
Jamaican withdrawal from the Federation of the West Indies.

1962
Jamaica became Independent. Alexander Bustamante is elected first prime minister.

1966
H.I.M. Haile Selassie I’s visit to Jamaica

1981
Bob Marley dies.

1988
Hurricane Gilbert devastates the island.

2006
Portia Simpson Miller becomes Jamaica’s first female PM.
