Global Reggae Charts – Issue 20 // January 2019
The first issue of the new year of Global Reggae Charts magazine is out. The end of 2018 was certainly a bit hectic for the whole GRC team, so we’re excited to be moving into 2019. Plenty of great music is currently out, plus there’s a whole year to summarize, so this issue is strictly focused on the charts! Our cover this month belongs to the inimitable Jah9, whose mystical and poetic approach to reggae music continues to impress audiences as well as our voters. Her latest track “Field Trip” is on the rise, currently sitting at #9.
Other songs of note on the singles chart include Tarrus Riley’s “Guess Who” right at the top, just ahead of the Alborosie and Chronixx collaboration “Contradiction.” Koffee’s “Toast” in its debut month, Beres Hammond’s “I’m Alive,” and Lila Iké’s “Second Chance” wrap up the top five. Albo and Beres join forces on “Too Rock” at #8, Mortimer sits at #10 with “Careful,” plus there’s another new entry at #14: Ras Demo’s “Dreader Than Dread.”
Of course, the album charts include some of the same names, yet there’s plenty of releases in just their first month – nine out of the twenty! Lee “Scratch” Perry’s The Black Album is #4; Eesah’s Masterpiece is #8, with Mykal Rose’s Healing of the Nation just behind, and the Black Roots’ Take It after that; then it’s Estelle’s Lovers Rock in at #15 followed by Natty Jean’s Imagine (#16) and Taj Weekes & Adowa’s To All My Relations (#17); finally, Jr Thomas & The Volcanos Rockstone and Ras Demo x Silly Walks Discotheque wrap things up. Long-standing albums from Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, and Reemah continue their relevance, although it’s Alborosie Meets The Wailers United and Agent Sasco sitting in the top two spots, respectively.
Riddims? Peng Peng Riddim is in at #1, out on Boomrush, while Maximum Sound and Walshy Fire both broke into the listings. TJ’s Wizzle Riddim hangs on at #5, its fourth month on the chart.
